A month ago I discovered 2 ways to use in Gmail address that can give greater control over inbox and save some time from managing mails! Here are two ways to modify Gmail address and still all mail will be directed to the original mail address!
Plus (“+”) addressing scheme
For example, if your email is xyz@gmail.com you could register your email address as xyz+javascript@gmail.com on a website that sends monthly newsletters on JavaScript (Sorry, I couldn’t pick any other topic beyond my programming domain) and still you will receive the same newsletters to your xyz@gmail.com address! Gmail will ignore the word javascript and directs the mail to your mailbox.
Before knowing this trick I was used to create a new filter for each subscribed newsletters websites. But now, I am very happy with this addressing scheme as it has saved me from creating separate filters for different websites where I’ve subscribed the newsletters for javascript. I’ve just created a single filter for xyz+javascript@gmail.com and re-registered with this email address on all the javascript newsletters websites. Now, I’m having only one filter for the javascript instead the three!
This addressing scheme can also play detective agent’s role. When you asked to give your email address on online shopping websites give something like xyz+abcOnlineStore@gmail.com. That way, whenever you get future emails addressed to that address, you’ll know that mail is either from abcOnlineStoredirectly or from someone else to whom they sold your email address. Solution: filtered, auto-delete. This is very effective spam tracking mechanism, don’t this?
Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters in addresses
You can add as many dots (".") as you wish, Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters in the address. It just ignores them. For example, you could tell people your address is ekgtechbeats@gmail.com or ekg.techbeats@gmail.com or ekg.tech.beats@gmail.com. It doesn't matter how many dots you've in your address, they will be striped out whenever you send the email!
Hope you enjoyed the post. Don't forget to share this post with your friends if you know someone of them could benefit from this post in some way.
Thank you.
