How to Use VLC Media Player to Convert Video

VLC Media Player is one of the best free media player. A very lightweight player that seamlessly support wide array of media formats and discs. It is available for almost all major operating systems like Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. VLC is not confined to play just multimedia files like audio or video.

It has tons of features that can ease up your life for performing any sort of multimedia operations like streaming video over the interent, ripping your DVDs, play subtitles, add logo to your video, and last but not least convert your video among various formats without installing any specialized video/audio editing tools.

Convert Video using VLC
  • Open VLC Media Player and click on Media and then Click Convert/Save...
  • You will see a new popup window named Open Media. Under the File tab browse and select the video you wanted to convert in the File Selection box.
  • Click Convert/Save button upon completing the file selection. Select the Destination folder and give the name for resulting video, select the video profile in which you wish to convert your video. VLC also allows deinterlacing of video by selecting the Deinterlace checkbox.
  • Optionally you can create your own conversion profile from the settings section instead the VLC's pre-packed profiles. You can create, edit or delete those conversion profiles from the 3 buttons placed beside the profile selection dropdown list under the Settings section.
  • If you are done with all of the aforementioned steps then click Start button.
That's it. Simple and fast. Go and get some coffee and relax for a while as the video conversion is resource intensive process and will take some time to convert the video from one format to another one. It all depends on the duration of the video.
